Heart Healthy Hawthorn
A small, shrub-like tree with sharp thorns,
Hawthorn is a member of the Rosaceae family. Its plant genus Crataegus includes
over 100 species. However, only a few species frequently
are developed for standardized extracts.
Hawthorn is used as a natural approach to heart disease.
Many studies have shown that Hawthorn is used to protect
the heart and vascular system through dilation of the veins
and arteries, regulation of heart rate, and lowering of cholesterol
levels.
The berries contain flavonoids, which are secondary metabolites
that provide the body with protection against parasites and
diseases and are more commonly known for their antioxidant
activities. Though berries typically have been used in traditional
herbal preparations, modern phytomedicinal extracts also
use leaves.
The discovery that flavonoid complexes, in particular, vitexin,
were responsible for cardiac actions attributed to the plant,
extracts that combines these achieve the highest concentration
of these active constituents. That is why Neway’s Hawthorn
incorporates 90 percent flavonoids unlike other products,
which only have a potency ranges from 2 to 12 percent.
Approved in Germany for Treatment
Used in European herbal medicine for centuries to promote
healthy heart and circulatory systems, hawthorn extracts
have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities
as well as the ability to dilate blood vessels, including
those supplying the heart. Studies have found that hawthorn
can improve the function of the heart muscle, increase
blood flow to the heart, lower blood pressure, promote
regular heart rhythm, and lower cholesterol levels. It
also has been shown to improve the symptoms of heart failure,
such as fatigue and shortness of breath. Hawthorn extract
has been approved in Germany for the treatment of mild
to moderate symptoms of chronic heart failure (also known
as congestive heart failure). |
